Larry A. Mortenson, age 72, of Canby, MN, passed away Monday, April 10, 2023 at the Sanford Canby Medical Center. Visitation will be held 4 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 with a 6 p.m. Prayer Service at the Houseman Funeral Home – Birk Chapel in Canby. There will be no formal funeral service or burial at this time. The Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Larry A. Mortenson was born on April 27,1950 in Canby, MN to Clinton and Irene (Negaard) Mortenson. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Larry graduated from Canby High School in 1968. He continued his education and graduated in 1969 from the welding program at Canby Area Vocational Technical School in Canby, MN. He then enlisted and served in the Army National Guard. Larry worked briefly in Sioux Falls, SD before returning home to Canby to farm with his dad. Larry also helped a good friend and neighbor as well as his brothers with various tasks around the farm. Larry lived a simple life. He enjoyed driving around hunting for asparagus in the spring, collecting aluminum cans from anyone who would hand them over, and watching sports on television. One of his greatest joys in the recent years was being able to take Duke aka “The Kid” for a ride who is the dog Curt and Larry shared. If you have ever driven into Curt and Larry’s yard, you could almost guarantee you would be immediately greeted in the driveway by Larry – even before you could get your vehicle in park. He enjoyed visits from his nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered by his siblings; one sister, Carol Lyng, Madison, MN; two brothers: Curt Mortenson, Canby, MN and Richard (wife Jackie) Mortenson, Canby, MN; one sister-in-law: Cheryl Mortenson, Canby, MN; many cousins; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Larry is preceded in death by his parents Clinton and Irene Mortenson: one brother, Norman Mortenson; and one brother-in-law, Pete Lyng.
