Janean Frieda (Meyer) McKay, age 85 of Redwood Falls, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at Garnette Gardens in Redwood Falls. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday October 5, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday AT THE CHURCH, and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Redwood Falls Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Service – Redwood Valley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Janean Frieda (Meyer) McKay was born March 14, 1937 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Minnesota to Alton and Elva (Stahn) Meyer. She attended District 32 country school and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1955. Janean then graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Distinction from the University of Minnesota in 1959. While in college, she was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron, Omicron Mu and Beta of Clovia. She was a member of the Mighty Mites 4-H club and served as an adult 4-H leader of the Loyal Scotties 4-H club in Redwood County. She worked as a U of M Extension Service 4-H Educator in Meeker and McLeod Counties in MN and taught in public school at Redwood Falls, Herman, Wabasso, and Belview, MN. Janean married Philip Irvin McKay on December 20, 1959 at Sundown Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed by Morris and Redwood Falls, MN. They retired from farming in 1997, following Philip’s heart surgery. Janean moved into the Homestead Apartments facility in 2006. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Redwood Falls where she was an ordained elder and a member of the church choir. Over the years, she was active in all areas of the church ministry at the local and Presbytery levels. Her special interests include making greeting cards, sewing quilts for charity, and family history – her genealogy software contains 7,788 names! She was also a member of the local Red Hat Ladies, Redwood County Home Economics Group, Retired Teachers, Card Club, Piecemakers quilt group, and Delhi Extension.
Janean is survived by her five sons: Kim of Redwood Falls, Kevin of Wabasso, Scott (Erica) of Alexandria, Glen of Sioux Falls, SD, and Gordon (Ann) of New Brighton, MN; grandchildren: Molly, Kari, and Matthew McKay; sister Mavis (William) Waterman of Corpus Christi, TX; brother-in-law Dr. Malcom (Nancy) McKay of Mendota Heights, MN; aunt Fern (Stahn) Anderson; four nieces; two nephews; and many cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Philip in 2005, father & mother-in-law Irvin and Ruth McKay, and several aunts and uncles.
