MARSHALL — Icy conditions have gripped roads and sidewalks in Marshall today after overnight sprinkles turned into snow. Drivers are advised to slow down, turn on headlights, maintain a safe following distance, and check 511 for current road conditions.
Director of Public Safety Jim Marshall reminded residents of the importance of following winter parking rules to avoid issues during snow removal.
“You need to pay close attention to signage so there’s laws that prevent you from parking on snow emergency routes. Those routes all go into place November 1st through April 1st. Same with parking lots in the downtown area. There are some parking lots that you’re allowed to park in overnight in half of it, and not the other half so you just need to pay very close attention to that,” Marshall said.
He added that the city works with the street department to notify residents who violate parking ordinances before ticketing or towing vehicles.
As measurable snowfall marks the beginning of winter, Meteorologist Corey Harguth shared a bit of Marshall’s snow history.
“The earliest we’ve ever seen measurable snow, so at least a tenth of an inch, would actually be the 2nd day of October back in 1999. The latest is December 21st, back in 2006. Last year, it was the very end of October, but we didn’t see our first inch in Marshall until the 8th of January and that was one of the few snowfalls we had last winter,” Harguth said.
Harguth predicted mostly dry weather for the rest of the week, with high temperatures staying in the low to mid-30s.
