Harvey Syltie, age 68, of Porter, MN passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 on his farm. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2019 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter, MN. Burial will be at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Porter, MN. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter, MN. The Houseman Funeral Home of Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Harvey Allen Syltie was born in Canby, MN on June 8, 1951 to his proud parents, Hans and Elvina (Bergerson) Syltie. He graduated from Canby High School in 1969 and furthered his education by attending two years at the U of M in Morris and two years at the U of M in St. Paul where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science. After college he worked for Wilson Meat Co. in Albert Lea and Buffalo, NY. In 1975 he was accepted as an IFYE (International Foreign Youth Exchange) to South Korea where he spent six months. On coming home, he started farming with his father and eventually farmed full time when his dad retired. In 1979 he married Paula Mickelson and their family grew with the addition of two children: Michael in 1985 and Lindsey in 1991.
Harvey’s two loves were his family and his farm. He also enjoyed driving school bus, playing trumpet in the Route 68 Jazz Band, singing in the Buffalo Ridge Chorale, serving on boards at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter, Lincoln-Lyon Electric, fishing across the State of Minnesota, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.
In 2016 Harvey was blessed with his first grandchild, William and his second grandchild, Abigail in 2018. He loved being a Grandpa.
He will be forever loved by his wife, Paula; two children: Michael (Kelsey) Syltie, Eagan, MN and Lindsey (Alex Dahl) Syltie, Bruce, SD; two grandchildren: William and Abigail; three sisters: Karen (Harlo) Peterson, Naples, FL, Anita (Eff) Embree, Bloomington, IL and Ellen (Bill) Spurlock, Lakeville, MN; two aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is joining his mother Elvina and father Hans in God’s Arms.
