Eugene House, age 86, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, September 11, 2020, at Avera Granite Falls Care Center in Granite Falls, Minnesota. The Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at United Methodist Church in Wood Lake, MN at 10:30 am. Visitation will be Monday September 14th, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Wood Lake, MN from 5-7 pm and also 1 hour prior to the funeral service.
Eugene Edward House was born on July 22, 1934 in Wood Lake, MN, to Herbert and Helen (Neuman) House. Gene grew up in Wood Lake where he attended school and graduated from Wood Lake High School in 1952. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota Agricultural School and was a member of the basketball team for 2 years. On February 8, 1958, Eugene was united in marriage to Delores Otto in Johnsonville Township. They lived in Wood Lake where they raised 5 children: Julie, Douglas, Debra, Larry and Michael. He farmed in the Wood lake area until his retirement in 1996. Eugene served as Yellow Medicine County commissioner for 16 years. He was a member of the Wood Lake Lions Club, the county ASCS and served numerous other regional boards. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and weekends with his family at the lake in the Alexandria area. He also enjoyed visiting area casinos and taking numerous trips around the country with friends during his retirement. He was a player and manager for the Wood Lake Lakers amateur baseball team for many years and he rarely missed watching the Minnesota Twins or Vikings on television. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. Whether it was attending sporting events, family gatherings or visits to the care center, pictures or Face-time calls…his day was made when he was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Delores House, daughters Julie (Dan) Bode of Lee’s Summit MO, Deb (Dale) Mack of Castlewood SD, and son Doug (Connie) House of Cottonwood, MN. 8 grandchildren: Tiffany (Dan) Scheffler, Adam (Laura) Bode, Tom (Jenay) House, Brent (Kari) Mack, Kim (Casey) Becker, Kayla (Ryan) Fromm, Bryce (Nikki) Mack, and Brandon Mack. 14 great grandchildren: Otto Scheffler, Evan and Maren Bode, Caroline and Will House, Birdie Mack, Kinsley and Kylie Becker, Nolan, Tate, and Madden Fromm, Brooke, Bradley, and Breckyn Mack. Brother James (Jan) House and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Helen House, parents in-law Fred and Bernice Otto, sons Larry and Michael, and sister Ruth Mundinger.
