MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Vance Boelter is being sentenced today in federal court for the politically motivated shootings that left former Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, dead and seriously injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

Boelter pleaded guilty last month to six federal charges, admitting he planned the attacks and carried them out while impersonating a police officer.

Federal prosecutors are asking for two consecutive life sentences, along with an additional 40 years in prison.

Boelter also faces separate state charges, including murder and attempted murder, which remain pending.
