Avon Elizabeth (Rogge) Hess was born on October 19, 1930, in Ghent to Henry and Leona (VanOverbeke) Rogge. Avon was a vibrant soul, one who really lit up the room whenever she entered. And right up until she became less able to get around, Mom was full of joy and always eager to help out, no matter what the circumstances were. Avon met Owen Willam Hess, the love of her life, at the roller-skating rink and they married on May 3, 1950 at Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall. From there on out, they had five lively boys, Doug, John, Randy, Wayne, Paul, and one devoted daughter, Kathryn “Kookie”. Avon never complained at her tasks, nor did she ever turn anyone away, whether it be family, friends, or local faces coming by the house for a cup of coffee or for one of her extraordinary garage sales. Mom had a love of music, in particular the Resurrection Choir at Holy Redeemer Church for 43 years. She thrived in her own way, always keeping busy helping others.

Avon died on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her children Douglas (and Sandra) Hess, John (and Liz) Hess, Randy Hess, Wayne (and Christine) Hess, Paul (and Lisa) Hess and Kathy “Kookie” (and Tim “Chubs”) Marlow; her grandchildren Nathan, Matthew, Taylor, Aaron, Jordyn, Emily, Madilyn, Natalie, Courtney, Austin, Brenna, Autumn, Zoe, Benjiman and Claire; and her great-grandchildren Aidin, Mickey and Bryce, and her sister MaryLou Michelson and brother Donald Rogge. She was preceded in death by her husband Owen W. Hess and grandson Owen T. Hess.
