For those that knew Anita, it will come as no surprise that she wanted you to hear from her, directly and in her own words, one last time. The following was written by Anita:
“My name is Anita Mae Hess. I was born in Marshall, Minnesota, to Merlyn and Alta Mae (Erickson) Powell on July 8, 1947. My siblings are David Powell, Dr. William Powell, Diane Kuecker, and Jim Powell. I was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Marshall. I attended school in Marshall and graduated in 1965. I then attended St. Cloud State for one year. The only “A” that I received was in badminton. I decided to change paths and went to Saint Cloud Beauty College and stuck with it. In 1967, Bill Hess and I were married and moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where he was stationed in the Air Force. I worked at a salon downtown and even had my hairstyles on TV! In 1968, Bill left for Vietnam and I moved back home and worked at Darrell’s Hair Salon. Later, I became the manager of Addy’s Salon. We were blessed with two children: Laura (and Brian) Greve and Mikel (and Shantel) Hess. In 1978, we started building a cabin on Lake Amelia. It took four years of hard work. The kids and I enjoyed spending many summers at the lake with Bill joining us on the weekends after his work week. We’ve tweaked our lake home by adding a bedroom and two garages over the years as we had planned to retire here. Lake Amelia has become the hub of the Powell and Hess families. When our children were in school, I landed a job at 509 Design. I learned interior design and faux flower arranging. It was the best job and we laughed every day. For several years I was asked to create many, many faux floral arrangements for Weiner Memorial Hospital Fundraisers. I also repaired and touched up broken ceramics. Our family went on several snow skiing trips to Colorado, went snowmobiling, and did a lot of water skiing! We always enjoyed doing things with our kids. Bill and I also loved going on fishing trips into Canada with friends. Great times! On Tuesday nights, I went to Fuzzy’s to eat, drink, pull tabs, and laugh with my girlfriends! I looked forward to this every week. In 2008, we began to go to Arizona. We loved it so much we purchased a home in Gold Canyon in 2011. We played golf, danced, toured around, and had great fun. We developed so many friendships here. In 2023, my health took a turn, and I got sick with COPD. In 2024, I spent five and a half months in and out of the hospital with COPD and bowel trouble. I fought hard but could never quite catch my breath and well… now you are reading this.
I leave behind my husband, Bill Hess of Marshall; daughter, Laura (and Brian) Greve of Marshall; grandson, Hunter (and Lydia) Greve and their son, Riggs Greve of Sioux Falls, SD; grandson, Cody (and Emma) Greve and their son, Archer Greve of Sioux Falls, SD; son, Mikel (and Shantel) Hess of Detroit Lakes; grandson, Nicklaus Hess (and fiancé’ Jaycee Nash) of Bozeman, MT; granddaughter, Ella Hess (and Brayden Sjoblom) of Detroit Lakes; siblings, David Powell of Marshall, Dr. William (and Frances) Powell of Menominee, WI, Dr. Ronald Kuecker of Windom, Jim (and Carol) Powell of Wake Forest, NC; Bill’s siblings, Tom (and Jeannie) Hess, Nancy Bruckner, Chuck (and Deb) Hess, Christine (and Carl) Rohlik; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
