SAINT PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is inviting businesses to apply for grant funding to own and operate electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Principal Sustainability Planner Beth Kallestad announced that this is the second round of funding available, following the selection of 12 locations along the I-94 and I-35 corridors.

Kallestad noted, “We have been able to get through contracts to build 12 different locations along I-94 and I-35. We are hoping in the second round to be able to get 14 more locations, so a total of 26.”

Businesses interested in applying must meet specific requirements, including ensuring that stations are no more than 50 miles apart along the roadway and within a mile of an exit. Each location must have a minimum of four charging ports capable of delivering 150 kilowatts of power.

MnDOT is offering $47 million in funding as part of a broader initiative, with Minnesota set to receive a total of $68 million over five years for the EV charging station program, which focuses on building fast charging stations along major interstates, including I-94, I-35, and I-90.
