ST. PAUL (LEARFIELD) - The Minnesota Health Department (MDH) reported the state's first death from COVID-19 over the weekend and said there are at least 169 confirmed cases of COVID-19 statewide. MDH spokeswoman Kris Ehresmann says the actual number of cases confirmed likely only represent a fraction of the total number of actual cases. Western Minnesota counties consider converting former prison to hospital for COVID-19 care

APPLETON (KMHL) – Three western Minnesota counties are looking at the possibility of converting the former Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton to a center to care for people who have coronavirus. According to the Swift County Monitor, Swift, Chippewa and Lac Qui Parle counties have asked the owner of the prison that closed in 2010 about using a portion of the facility exclusively for coronavirus patients. The plan would start with 11 rooms and could expand to 77 beds if needed.

ST. PAUL (LEARFIELD) - The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) today is reporting the first confirmed death of a Minnesota resident due to COVID-19. According to the Department of Health, the death occurred Thursday (March 19) in Ramsey County as a resident in their 80s who recently had tested positive for the virus. Lawrence Duane “Larry” Bot was born on December 10, 1952, in Marshall, MN, to Fred and Lillian (Thorsteinson) Bot. He grew up on a farm near Ivanhoe and graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1971. Larry attended and graduated from Diesel Technician Program at the Canby Vocational Technical School in 1974. He began working for Midway Farm Equipment in Mountain Lake, MN, and worked there until his retirement.
