MONTEVIDEO (KMHL) – A proposed veterans home in Montevideo is awaiting a funding decision from the Federal government.

That is what Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Herke told officials in Montevideo during his visit to the community early this week.

The state legislature allocated $9.4 million toward the cost of the project – but officials aren’t likely to hear if the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will confirm their portion of the funding until early 2020.

Herke said while the funding isn’t guaranteed yet, the planning team is optimistic. If the funding is approved, the tentative construction timeline could set up for the veterans’ home opening in early 2022.
