Virgil Voss, age 90, of Canby, MN passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30a.m. on Friday, March 26th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby. A walk-through visitation will be held from 5 to 7p.m. on Thursday, March 25 at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Canby. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby, MN.
Virgil Louis Voss was born in Iona, MN on November 19, 1930. His parents were Joseph and Josephine (Wiltgen) Voss. He was baptized at St. Columba Catholic Church in Iona, MN and was confirmed at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Woodstock, MN. He attended country school for eight years. Virgil entered the United States Army in 1949 and spent two years overseas serving on the front line in the Korean War. On April 19, 1952, Virgil was united in marriage to Jean Klosterman at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Woodstock, MN. After working for Northern States Power Company in Granite Falls, MN, he attended barber school in Minneapolis. He first barbered at the U of M, Twin Cities Campus. They lived in Breckenridge, MN for a short time after which they moved to Canby where they set up their home. Virgil barbered in Canby for 50 years. His clientele came from all over the area and his shop was lively with good conversation and jokes. Virg always enjoyed telling a good story. He enjoyed fishing in all the local lakes and rivers, hunting, playing cards, going to the casino and having coffee with his friends.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean of Canby; children: Richard (Lori) Voss of Sioux Falls, SD, Debra (Don) MacKenzie of Balsam Lake, WI, Jayne VanOverbeke of Hutchinson, MN, Pamela (Rod) Weber of Madison, MN and Mark Voss of Canby, MN; grandchildren: Alison (Kyan) Kingston, Scott (Lisa) Voss, Corey MacKenzie (Mary Jo Johnson), Heather (Darren) Wirtz, Cathy MacKenzie (Ben Tourville), Terry MacKenzie, Kristen Schuft, Kari VanOverbeke, Jason (Courtney) VanOverbeke, Tyson Weber and Jared (Sable) Weber; many great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Harmsen of Luverne, MN, brother Marvin “Bob” (Lois) Voss of Maple Grove, MN; sister-in-laws: Kathi (Dan) Block of Coon Rapids, MN and Lois Gaskin of San Diego, CA; many nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends Lee VanOverbeke, Frank Ochocki, Bob McKeen and Joan Citrowske. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, George and Catherine Klosterman; sister Dorothy Jackson, brothers-in-law: Russ Harmsen, Jerry Gaskin and James (Phyllis) Klosterman; sisters-in-law: Caryl (Arvin) Jeppeson and Barbara (Nathan) Christmas.
