Sophie C. Gawerecki, age 95, of Hendricks, MN passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Hendricks Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 28, 2019 at the St. John Cantius Catholic Church, Wilno, MN. Burial will be in the St. John Cantius Catholic Cemetery, Wilno. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Hendricks and will resume Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sophie Clara Gawerecki was born December 15, 1924 to Frank and Dorothy (Sik) Lacek in Hendricks Township, Lincoln County, Minnesota. She was raised in Lincoln County by Dane Lake and attended country school. Sophie was baptized and confirmed at St. John Cantius Catholic Church. Following her education, she worked alongside her father on the family farm.
Sophie was united in marriage to Harry Gawerecki on June 30, 1947 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno. The couple lived and farmed in Lincoln County. Harry passed away on April 23, 1997. She remained on the farm and enjoyed volunteering at the Arco Community Center for many years. She moved to Dawson, MN where she lived for few years before moving to Hendricks. In May of 2017, she entered the Hendricks Nursing Home. Sophie passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Hendricks Hospital at the age of 95.
She was a life-long member of St. John Cantius Catholic Church where she served in the Altar Society and the CCW. Sophie enjoyed embroidering, canning, gardening, fishing, listening to music and Square Dancing. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: James (Lois) Gawerecki, Lake Benton, MN, Clarence Gawerecki, Ivanhoe, MN, Raymond Gawerecki, Hutchinson, MN, Mary (Allen) Regnier, Dawson, MN, Thomas (Dawn) Gawerecki, Canby, MN and Hattie (James) VanDerostyne, Porter, MN; son-in-law, Philip (Karen) Leuning, Arco, MN; 14 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; brother, James (Janice) Lacek, Rapid City, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter Dorothy and three sisters: Margaret Bednarek, Gertrude Bednarek and Patricia Kubiszewsi.
