David C. Kurth was born May 25, 1941 in Hendricks, Minnesota to Wesley and Bernice (Nelson) Kurth. He was raised near Hendricks where he attended New Grove Country School and then graduated high school from Hendricks. Following high school, he worked as a carpenter until he was drafted into the United States Army on January 24, 1964. David served in the Army for two years serving one tour in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on January 23, 1966.

David was united in marriage to Sylvia Nielsen on September 2, 1966. They had three children: Karla, Todd and Brett. David continued working as a carpenter and later became a Postmaster for the US Postal Service.

David enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, woodworking and anything involving his grandchildren. In the summer you could generally find him on the dock or in the boat enjoying the lake. In the past few years he enjoyed working in the garden alongside Sylvia. In the winter he spent many hours putting together puzzles when he wasn’t removing snow for the neighbors. He was a member of the Watertown, SD VFW, and an active member of the Shaokatan Sportsman’s Club.

Grateful having shared David’s life are his wife of 53 years, Sylvia Kurth, Lake Shaokatan, MN; daughter, Karla (Tim) Howard; seven grandchildren: T.J. (Aly) Howard, Taylor (Haley) Kurth, Austin (Tori) Kurth, Jenna Kurth, Beau Kurth, Dylan (Kelsey) Kurth and Aspen Kurth; great grandchildren: Jamie and Piper Howard and Decker Kurth; two siblings: Blaine Kurth and Marcy McCarthy and nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his two sons: Todd and Brett Kurth; parents; and his “other mother” mother-in-law Norma Nielsen.
