Mavis Maxine Anderson was born June 11, 1922 in Alta Vista Township to Berton and Lillian (Anderson) Jacobson. She was born and raised in the rural Porter community and attended District 34 through 8th grade. Mavis was no stranger to hard work as she was her Dad’s “hired man” starting at age 14.  Mavis married Donald (Ole) Anderson April 26, 1950 at Porter Lutheran Church. They farmed near Porter until Donald’s death on February 19, 1973.  Mavis worked for Canby Community Hospital for 21 years in dietary and housekeeping departments. After retirement from the hospital, she was hired as a baker for the newly established Porter Development Café until age 80. Her many delicious pies and baked goods were enjoyed by many.  Mavis was very proud of her Porter roots and served Bethel Lutheran Church as a Trustee, Sunday School Treasurer for 30 years, LCW, coffee hour baker for many years and sewed many mission quilts. She was “community minded” and a member of the Porter Legion Auxiliary, election judge, Porter Development Project and the restoration of the Historic Porter Jail. A special day was when she was crowned Porter Harvest Festival Queen in 2002.  Her many hobbies included sewing, gardening and baking her specialty donuts, cookies and lefse. Many cakes were decorated for special occasions including wedding cakes for her three granddaughters. She loved watching Wheel of Fortune and the Minnesota Twins.
