Matthew Vincent Scherr was born on March 16, 1946, to Ralph and Clara Scherr in Linton, ND. Matt was proud to call Linton his hometown. He was raised with his three sisters near his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. The Catholic Faith was important to Matt. He attended St. Anthony’s Catholic School K-12 in Linton and was a member of St. Anthony’s Church. Even through adulthood, Matt rarely missed Mass. He was happy to be a member of Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall. Matt thrived growing up in a small town. He developed close relationships and established many friends that have been lifelong. He loved playing basketball, baseball, and other sports. He often told stories of games, practices, and other memories. Hard work was important in Matt’s family. He became employed at an early age to help the family with expenses. After high school graduation, Matt enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country from 1965-1969 working as an airplane mechanic. The B52 airplane was his favorite. Matt was stationed in Thailand which he enjoyed very much. He often said that he thought Thailand was a tropical paradise. He enjoyed meeting Thai people to share some of the language he had learned while stationed there. Matt proudly attained the rank of E5. Matt returned to Linton where he met the love of his life, MaryAnn Volk. They were married on April 24, 1971. They had three children. They made their home in Linton until a job opportunity selling car parts at a Ford dealership came up in Glendive, MT. They happily lived in Glendive for nine years until Matt pursued another job opportunity in Marshall selling car parts at Marshall Ford and Tholen Auto. Matt and MaryAnn have called Marshall Home since 1988. Next, Matt changed careers to work at North Star Insurance in Cottonwood, MN. He talked often about how much he enjoyed his co-workers at North Star and his job there. He worked at North Star for nine years until his retirement in 2011. Finding that he needed something to keep him occupied, he started to drive vehicles for Kruse Motors throughout Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa. His last retirement job was working as a crossing guard for Marshall Public Schools on the corner by the public library. There was nothing more important than keeping the kids safe on his corner. Matt’s interests included airplanes and air shows throughout the Midwest. He enjoyed cars and car shows as well. He liked to play cards, with his favorite game being Pinochle. Matt was proud of his German heritage, enjoying German food, music, and customs. He also enjoyed tractor pulls and threshing shows. His favorite hobby was to go for long drives.
