Our beloved mother, Mary Virginia Winn (Heinz), died December 25, 2021, at Heritage Pointe Senior Living in Marshall, surrounded by members of her family.  Mary was born September 8, 1928, in Dimock, SD, the youngest of eight children. She graduated from high school in Ethan, SD, and worked in Mitchell, SD, until she married James Harry Winn on October 15, 1949. They were married for 65 years when Jim passed away in 2014. Mary was also preceded in death by her oldest son Roger (Andrea); she is survived by eight children: Thomas (Karen), Kenneth (Cindy), Jennifer (Scott Kluver), Nancy (Roy Krasean), Laurie (Steven Gilseth), Carolyn (Paul Landberg), Christopher (Sally), and Philip (Barbara).  Mary is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, a tight-knit clan that lives all over the world.

Mary and Jim settled in Marshall in the early 1960’s. They were very involved in Holy Redeemer Church, and she was a member of the Ladies Guild and Catholic Daughters. She also volunteered her time for many other needs of the church.  Raising nine children is almost unimaginable these days, and the warm bonds of the succeeding generations are a testament to Mary’s ingenuity and love. Mary ran a calm and supportive home, and she was proud of all her kids’ accomplishments. All the meals were made from scratch, including eight loaves of bread every week, and cookies were always available. Mom was always doing for others and derived her greatest joy watching others get pleasure from her hard work. She was an avid reader and was very grateful for the books on tape and other services she received from the American Society for the Blind. Mary, Jim, and the entire extended family so enjoyed their weekends at Lake Shetek, starting in the 1970’s in the pink trailer. We don’t know how our mom could feed 30 people out of that trailer and put up with the heat and tight spaces but she did. So many great memories for all.  Being a very social, intelligent, and humorous person, Mary had many good friends, but she especially treasured the ladies of her bridge club, many of whom were members for over 50 years. After her husband passed, Mary lived on her own in her home until a year ago. Her very special neighbors, Darlene and Jim Jandl, were an important and dear part of Mary’s days during this time.

Mary Winn’s family would like to thank all of the staff of Heritage Pointe and Prairie Home Hospice for their loving care of our mom.

Services will be held at a later date.
