John Frederick Daniels, age 74 of Balaton, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Sanford Sioux Falls Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Stephens Funeral Service – Tracy Area Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
John Frederick Daniels was born June 11, 1949 to Lowell and Blanch (Kiyome) Daniels in Brandon, SD. He enlisted in the Army in 1967. While in Vietnam, John served as part of the Screaming Eagles, who were most known for jumping from helicopters. Upon his discharge, he attained the rank of Captain. After the service, John settled in Stillwater, OK and then moved to Sioux Falls, SD. In 2014, John moved to Balaton. He jumped into the community with both feet! He joined the American Legion Post 237 right away and became Sergeant at Arms. Shortly thereafter, he became Commander. The Legion was his passion, along with supporting the Balaton community. John was united in marriage to Julienne (VanNevel) Roby at Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton on November 7, 2015. John was very dedicated to helping the Balaton community and his dedication was recognized when he was awarded the Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 2023. This was a true honor for him to receive this award. He enjoyed all of American Legion duties, spending time with his grandchildren and watching sports, especially the Vikings.
John is survived by his wife Julie Roby-Daniels; children: Josh (Ashleigh) Daniels of Balaton, Cherann Beers of UT, Erica Quigley of Stillwater, OK, Shane Daniels and Chad Daniels; step-children: Christa (Shawn) Peterson of Russell & Craig Wilson of Marshall; grandchildren: Paisley & Jason Daniels, Sara Peterson, Gabby (Mike) Roe, Jenny (Justin) Beall & Lyla Beers; great grandchild Jaci Ann; siblings: Greg (Janet) Daniels, Tom (Janet) Daniels, and David Daniels, Deb (Gary) Muston, and Jackie Harris; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chuck and Lowell, grandsons Jacob and Andrew Peterson, and brother-in-law Mike Harris.
