Jason “Pidge” VanEngen, age 45, of Canby, MN, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at the Canby High School Gymnasium in Canby, MN with Rev. Levi Bollerud officiating. Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. Visitation will resume Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the Canby High School. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.

Jason Alan VanEngen was born January 24, 1978 in Hartley, Iowa to David and Terri (Egdorf) VanEngen. He was baptized on March 5, 1978 at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn, IA and confirmed on October 31, 1993 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN. Jason began his education in Sanborn Elementary School where he attended through the first grade. The family moved to Dawson, MN where he attended school, graduating from Dawson-Boyd High School in 1996. He continued his education at Minnesota West in Granite Falls, MN where he obtained an associate degree in accounting. He then attended Southwest State University (SMSU) in Marshall, MN where he received his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Jason taught at Starbuck, Echo and Clarkfield Charter Schools, and in 2019 became a 4th Grade Teacher in the Canby Elementary School. During the past 20+ summers, he also worked for Minnesota Valley Electric in Montevideo, MN.  He was united in marriage to Casie Full on August 29, 2009. Following their marriage, they lived and raised their three children: Daven, Jada and McKenna in Canby, MN. Jason was active in all of his children’s activities and enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. He also coached football and golf and was involved in other community activities. He touched the lives of many Canby Public School students and community.

Grateful for having shared Jason’s life are his wife, Casie VanEngen; three children: Daven, Jada and McKenna; all of Canby, MN; his mother, Terri (Gregg) Tucholke, Dawson, MN; sister, Jami (Ken) Sather, Dawson, MN; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Tylene Egdorf, Sanborn, IA; mother and father in law, Doug and Deb Full, Canby, MN; sisters-in-law: Katie (Eric) Morgan, Philadelphia, PA, Tracie (Todd Lendt) Hansen, Canby, MN, and Leslie (Brent) Garvey, Goodwin, SD; step brother: Matthew (Kelsie) Tucholke, West Fargo, ND; step sisters: Katie (Jordan) McCormick, Fargo, ND and Kelli (Travis Brekken) Tucholke, Butterfield, MN; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, David VanEngen (2004), and paternal grandparents, Albert and Agnes VanEngen.
