Harry Hansen, age 89, of Hendricks, MN passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019 at the Hendricks Nursing Home. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2019 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks with Rev. David Christenson officiating. Burial will be in the Diamond Lake Cemetery, rural Lake Benton, MN. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service at the Hendricks Hospital Chapel in Hendricks. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Hendricks is entrusted with the arrangements.
Harry William Hansen was born on May 27, 1930 near Elkton, South Dakota to Charlie and Ingrid (Bonde) Hansen. He was raised near Elkton where he received his education. When Harry was 14, he started working for a farmer near Lake Benton, MN.
Harry was united in marriage to Bessie Haack on December 5, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake Benton. The couple lived on a farm north of Lake Benton where he farmed until they moved into Lake Benton. Harry then began working at the elevator. He furthered his education by attended Canby Votech and where he graduated in Accounting and Ag Chemical. Following his graduation, the family moved to Madison, MN where he was the bookkeeper at the elevator and also at the Arco, MN elevator. Harry later managed several elevators including: Amiret, Seaforth, and Dehli, MN. The couple settled in Hendricks where he worked at the Hendricks Elevator until his retirement in 1991. Harry then began working part-time at Kirkvold’s in Hendricks where he worked until 2017. Harry passed away Thursday, July 4, 2019 at the Hendricks Nursing Home at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 7 days.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks. He served in the Minnesota State Guard in the 1950’s. Harry also served on the volunteer fire departments in Belview, Lake Benton and Seaforth. He had many enjoyments in life which included hunting, fishing, collection toy cars and playing golf and Rummikub. He also had a passion for buying and refurbishing old tractors.
He is lovingly remembered by his four children: Bill (Carolyn) Hansen, Sioux Falls, SD, Marla Henne, Hendricks, MN, Jon (Jennifer) Hansen, Marshall, MN and Craig (Lisa) Hansen, Ivanhoe, MN; son-in-law, John Rooney, Oakes, ND; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Eunise Samana, San Mateo, CA; brother-in-law, Arnie Haack; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Haack and Jean Lichtsinn and many nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; wife Bessie; long time companion Violet Reinertson; two daughters: Brenda Berndt and Aine Rooney; three grandchildren: Richard and Michael Gage and Corey Berndt and daughter-in-law Sandy Hansen.
