Fern Mether, age 91, of Nassau, MN, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024 at her home. Graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at the Canby City Cemetery, Canby, MN with Rev. Leroy Hopper officiating. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Fern (Standlea) Mether was born June 26, 1933, to Oliver and Nettie (Spencer) Standlea in Berwyn, Nebraska. She was the youngest of 11 children and was raised in Nebraska. She lived in Berwyn, Ansley, as well as on a ranch south of Gordon. She graduated from Gordon High School and attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, MN. She worked as 2nd cook at Gordon Hospital, a candy maker at Fanny Farmers in Minneapolis and as 2nd in charge of files at Iowa National Insurance Company in Minneapolis. In all of this, she was also an interior decorator. She attended Souls Harbor Church in downtown Minneapolis. It was there she met Don Mether who was a member of the T.V. choir. On February 2, 1957, Fern was united in marriage to Don in the Oak Knoll area of Hennepin County, MN. Two children were born to this union. After Don’s early retirement, the family moved to Lac Qui Parle County, MN, and later moved to Nassau, MN where they lived for 30 years. During their time in Nassau, Don passed away. Don and Fern loved gospel music and taking their family to concerts in Sioux Falls, SD and Cedar Falls, IA. Don and Fern really enjoyed the concert series they put together in Marshall, MN.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dorene and Ken; sisters-in-law: Lucille Clapp and Ann Terp; brother-in-law, Robert Mether; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Nettie Standlea; siblings: Laura (Perry) Miller, Mary (Don) Snodgrass, Elizabeth Standlea, Anna (Floyd) Griffin, Lawrence (Germaine) Standlea, Frank, David and John Standlea, and Blanche (Sibert) Holmquist; in-laws, Keneth and Florence Mether; stepmother-in-law, Bernice Mether; and Don’s siblilngs: Lois (Iver) Eilers, Maurice (Delores) Mether, Loren Terp (just 4 days prior to Don), Charles Clapp and Carol Mether.
