Duane K. Severson, age 85, of Canby, MN passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at the Sanford Canby Medical Center. Connie Severson, age 82, of Canby, MN passed away Friday, January 7, 2022 at the Hendricks Nursing Home. Funeral services for Connie and Duane will be 10:30 am Saturday, January 22, 2022 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. Burial will be in the East Highland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Brandt, SD. Visitation will be 5 – 7 pm Friday, January 21st at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby, MN with will resume Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Duane Keith Severson was born July 19th, 1936 at Hendricks Hospital, Hendricks, Minnesota to Palmer and Bernice (Jesme) Severson. He attended country school and graduated from Gary High School in 1954. Duane worked on the family farm until he married the love of his life, Connie Powelson, on June 7th, 1959. Duane had a love of farming, especially raising animals. Before marriage, Duane worked to acquire farm machinery to invest in his own farm south of Lake Cochrane. For 30 plus years he farmed southwest of Gary on a small family farm where he raised hogs, dairy cattle and crops. Duane attended Lake Area Vocational School and earned his certification in drafting. He worked for Christensen Farms for five years while living in Canby, Minnesota and was a 20 year cancer survivor. Duane had a love of woodworking and started a small business of restoring and refinishing furniture for many people in the Canby community. Duane always said his life began when he got married and started a family. He was always ready to listen with an open heart, never judging, never offering an opinion, but allowing you to talk, which led you to the answer you needed. Duane always put everyone else’s needs before his own.
Duane passed away early Tuesday morning, January 11th, 2022 at Sanford Canby Hospital after fighting chronic kidney disease at the age of 85.
Connie & Duane are survived by their daughters and foster son; Connie’s siblings Greg (Jill) Powelson and Judy Peters; Duane’s siblings Elroy and Paul (Norma) Severson; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Connie & Duane are preceded in death by both sets of parents Jeanne & Virgil Powelson and Bernice & Palmer Severson; Connie’s brother Terry Powelson, sister-in-law Delores (Bren) Severson and infant baby Bradley Quail.
