Mass of Christian Burial for Doris Mary (Stumm) Young, 99, of Marshall, will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue on Monday, September 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the Remembrance Center. Interment will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall. Doris passed away peacefully lovingly surrounded by family on September 5, 2026. Her joyful spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. The Horvath Funeral Service in Marshall is handling the arrangements.
Doris was born on January 9, 1927, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Carl and Lillian Borneman. She graduated from McDonell Catholic High School in 1944. In 1947, Doris married James E. Stumm in Chippewa Falls. They lived in Wisconsin until 1956, when they moved to Marshall, Minnesota. Together, Doris and James had eleven children. James passed away in 1969. In 1984, Doris married Donald “Doc” Young, who passed away in 1991. Doris’s ardent Catholic faith and devotion to the Rosary sustained her throughout her life. One of her most cherished memories was meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican when she was 85. Known affectionately to many as “Gramma D,” Doris was a talented and creative woman who found joy in life’s simple pleasures and new adventures. Music was always close to her heart. She loved singing in church and the Boulder Choir, and in her younger years she shared her talents through performances with the Marshall Community Players. One of her favorite memories was tap dancing with her dad as a child, and she often talked about putting on her tap shoes again for her 100th birthday. We can only imagine her joy of dancing with him in heaven. Doris was a wonderful cook. Nobody could replicate her much-loved potato salad. She loved surprises and had a delightful sense of humor that could brighten any room. And, no day was complete until she had tackled the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle. Curious, enthusiastic, and always ready for an adventure, Doris was an intrepid traveler. Over the years, she created countless treasured memories with her children as they traveled together to numerous countries around the world and visited all 50 states. Her genuine interest in people and places and her eagerness to experience all that life had to offer made every journey memorable. For many years, she was the welcoming presence at the Chalet Club. She was also a longtime volunteer with the Avera Marshall Medical Auxiliary, serving for a time as its president and for several years as volunteer manager of the Auxiliary Thrift Store. Doris leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, laughter, adventure, and love. Her life was full, her spirit was joyful, and the faith, laughter, and love she shared will live on in all who knew her.
Doris is survived by her children: J. Michael (Mary Jean) Stumm, Susan Moore Nelson, Mary (James) Jarussi, Fred (Ruby) Stumm, Kathleen (Steven) Bettenhausen, Anne (Jeff) Holcomb, Mark Stumm, Kimberley (Tom) Delaney, Lisa (Mike) Rogers, and Laura (Jeff) Taylor; John’s wife, Barbara Stumm; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Janet (Ron) Buckli; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, John Stumm; her brother, William Borneman; Susan’s husband, Stanford Nelson; Kathleen’s first husband, Steve Hagg; her grandsons-in-law, Reid Fowler and Jeremy Paxton; and her special friend, Rodney Bennett.
