Alta Marian Muhl Johnson was born August 5th, 1922, in Lyon County township Shelburne section 22 SW farmstead to Peter and Cora Muhl. She was the oldest of four children (Brothers Lowell, Carroll, and sister Mary Lou). Alta attended country schools first grade through eighth grade (rural townships school district, graduating eighth grade at Alta Vista district #34 in Lincoln County), and then attended Minneota High School graduating in 1941. She worked in Carl Christianson’s Café and the Red Owl in Minneota before leaving to find employment in Minneapolis. There she worked at Woolworths and the Federal Reserve Bank and lived independently for four years before returning home to get married in June 1946 to Gordon Johnson of Minneota. The couple lived on a farm outside of town where they raised their three boys. Alta was very active in numerous church groups including circles, sewing and quilting groups, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for thirty one years. While not farming Gordon and Alta travelled extensively in the winter months across the United States.  Alta especially enjoyed cruises, time in Hawaii and spending time with her children and their families in the Dakota’s, Texas, Utah and California and on family trips and cruises.  Alta died on January 23rd, 2023 at the Prairie Home Hospice McLaughlin House in Marshall.

Alta is survived by her three sons, Glenn of Minneota; Gary of Fargo, ND; Gregory (Tracy) of Alamo, CA; three grandchildren; Eric Johnson of Fargo; Kathryn (Michael) Sander of Lake Park, MN; Matthew Johnson of Austin TX; two great-grandchildren Carson and Kaden Sander; sister Mary Lou of Willmar, and many nieces and nephews. Alta was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Cora Muhl, her loving husband of 64 years Gordon Johnson, brother Lowell Muhl (Dorothy). Brother Carroll Muhl (Darlene) and brother-in-law Jim Lindstrom. Brother-in-law Orlando (Irene) Johnson; Merlin (Florence) Johnson; sister in-law Arlet (and Al) Olson; Annabelle (and Francis) Claeys; and sister in-law Esther Johnson.

She was loved and appreciated by everyone. She made it a point to stay in contact with family and friends. She loved her phone calls to wish someone a happy birthday or check on their kids, or just to see what was happening in their lives. She loved her family and friends.  Those who visited with her even in the later years appreciated her humble, thoughtful loving kind spirit.
