Marvin Oberg, age 95, of Milroy, Minnesota, died under the care of hospice on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at his home. Memorial Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milroy, Minnesota. Interment with military honors will follow at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery outside of Milroy. A reception of attendees will then be held back at the church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to his celebration, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, also at the church. Arrangements are with the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall.
Marvin Herman Oberg was born on November 21,1930, at the hospital in Tyler, Minnesota. He was the son of Arthur and Emma (Steuck) Oberg. Marvin was baptized at Sillerud Lutheran Church near Balaton. In 1938, when he was 7 years old, his family moved to a farm north of Walnut Grove, where he attended country school District 116 in Springdale Township. Marvin graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1949. He then joined the United States Navy and served his country from 1950-1954. While stationed in Key West, Marvin served as a fishing guide for visiting dignitaries. During that time, President Harry S. Truman wintered at the Little White House, along with his wife and daughter. Marvin was proud to have taken the First Lady and Margaret fishing on a PT (patrol torpedo) boat. Following his time in Key West he served on the USS Pittsburg and traveled the Mediterranean Sea before his honorable discharge. When Marvin returned to the Walnut Grove area, he rented land north of town and began his career in farming. On May 19, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Petersen at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Milroy. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past May. In 1960 the couple moved to a farm north of Milroy, and within a few years bought their permanent homestead just a few miles away. Together they worked tirelessly to grow their farm, raising dairy cattle, and later hogs, corn, soybeans and oats. Marvin enjoyed working the land and was always finding jobs that needed to be done. He rarely finished his workday before 10 PM. He enjoyed watching rodeos, traveling, visiting Europe and taking cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal, as well as taking their small pickup camper on short trips. Following their retirement from farming Marvin and Margie enjoyed a trip to New York and Niagara Falls.
Marvin cherished his farm home and was determined to live out his days there, which he did, passing peacefully on September 16, 2026. He reached the age of 95 years, 9 months, and 26 days. Blessed be his memory.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marge Oberg of Milroy; daughter, Marilyn Donner (Jim Havens); son, Mark (Jennifer Olson) Oberg; grandchildren, Freya Oberg, Emily (Kelvin) Borchardt, Christy Fliss, Kelly (Luke) Walling, and Eric (Shi Almont) Donner; great-grandchildren, Archer Borchardt, Gunner, Cali and JJ Fliss, and Brystal, Brennyn, Lincoln and Lila Walling; sister, Diane (Vern) Krentz; brother, David (Jean) Oberg; brother-in-law, Duane Petersen; sister-in-law, Cathy Petersen, and several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Art and Emma Oberg; brothers, Wilbur Oberg, Vernon Oberg; niece, Jessica Wendeborn; brother-in-law, Jim Petersen; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Petersen and Shirley Petersen.
