Avis Kruger, age 94, of Canby, MN passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, September 22nd at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, SD. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4pm on Sunday, September 21st at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Canby, MN. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Augusta Cemetery in Marietta, MN. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Avis Arlene Kruger was born on October 16, 1930 in Altamont, South Dakota to Leslie and Erna (Walter) Tribitt. She attended country school to the 8th grade. Avis was united in marriage to Vern William Kruger at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 31, 1950 while Vern was in the United States Army. To this union they were blessed with two daughters, Joan and Karen. Together they farmed for 30 years until Vern’s unexpected death on July 13, 1981. After Vern’s death, Avis moved into Canby that fall. She then worked as a cook at Community Health Services in Canby for several years. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, playing cards, doing word finds and watching the Game Show Network. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, SD. Avis passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 1 day at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Grateful for having shared Avis’ life are her two daughters: Joan (Raymond) Sorenson of Marshall, MN and Karen (Darold) Hansen of Canby, MN; her three grandchildren: Shelley (Greg) Vannett of Savage, MN, Derrick (Kari) Hacker of Canby, MN and Nathan (Jess) Hacker of Canby, MN and seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings: Albert (Twylla) Tribitt and Deloris (Leon) Bekaert.
