Betty (Goeden) Dephilippis, 82 of Canby, MN passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 11am with a visitation beginning at 10am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the mass, with a burial to follow at St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Taunton, MN. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby, MN is entrusted with the arrangements.
Elizabeth Josephine “Betty Jo” Dephilippis (Kontz) was born on October 8, 1942, on her family’s farm near Elkton, South Dakota to Arnold and Loretta Kontz. The youngest of 9 children, Betty was a beloved member of her family. She attended grade school in Canby and graduated from Canby High School in 1960. Shortly after, she set off for Minneapolis with friends in search of work and met her first husband. In 1962, they married and moved to California eager to build a life together and start a family. Betty raised four children all while working full time as a CEO, CFO, bookkeeper, and accountant. She had a very strong work ethic and instilled that in all of her children. Betty met her second husband and the love of her life, Gregory DePhilippis in 1995. They married on November 25, 2000, sharing many years of unconditional love, memories and laughter together. They resided in California until they moved to Betty’s hometown of Canby, MN in 2019. Betty would light up a room with her smile and laughter. She loved telling jokes, playing card and dice games, having cocktails, and spending time with loved ones. She had a warmth that would make those around her feel loved. She was a lifelong Catholic and cherished her faith.
Betty is survived by her husband Gregory DePhilippis, sister Claretta Keimig, children: Jerry (Michelle) Goeden, Joy Goeden, Gini (Paul) Mackay and Jamie (Chad) Marler; bonus children: Greg Dephilippis Jr, Julie Dephilippis, and Jessica (Colby) Shay; grandchildren: JJ (Melissa) Goeden, Brooke (Timothy) Strader, Stephanie Horwitz (Bryan) Foote, Jacqueline Horwitz, Brinkley Marler, Nichole Byrne, Chloe Byrne, Wyatt Shay, and Winston Shay; great grandson James Goeden, and many very dear nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Loretta Kontz, brothers; Laurel Kontz, Bob Kontz, Frank Kontz, Wayne Kontz, Dale Kontz and sisters, Margie Pesch and Donna Verschelde.
