WILLMAR, Minn. — The Willmar School District canceled all classes Tuesday (today) after receiving a threat related to school safety, district officials said.

In a message posted Monday night, Superintendent Dr. Bill Adams said the district began investigating immediately in coordination with local law enforcement but needed more time to determine the threat’s credibility.

“After school today, the district received a threat regarding school safety. We immediately began an investigation in close collaboration with local law enforcement. At this time, the school district and local authorities need more time to fully investigate and determine the credibility of this threat,” Adams said.

All Willmar Public Schools are closed Tuesday, April 7, 2026. District officials said there will be no eLearning, no access to school buildings, and all before- and after-school activities are canceled. Cardinal Place will also be closed.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priority. We apologize for the inconvenience this sudden closure causes and deeply appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our school community,” Adams said. “We will continue to evaluate the situation alongside law enforcement and will provide you with an update when available.”

Earlier Monday, a separate incident at a middle school involved a student found with a paring knife in their backpack. No injuries were reported. In a letter to families, Adams said the situation stemmed from a weekend social media exchange involving “inappropriate and threatening language” between two students and was handled according to district policies. The district did not indicate whether the student faced arrest.
