Verlyn Johnson, age 82, Hendricks, MN passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at the Hendricks Community Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, November 22nd at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks, MN. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4pm on Sunday, November 21st at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Hendricks with a prayer service at 4pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Hendricks. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel of Hendricks is entrusted with the arrangements.
Verlyn DeWayne Johnson was born on the family farm near Hendricks, Minnesota on November 14, 1939 to parents Virgil C. and Mildred Alydia (Peterson) Johnson. He was raised on the family farm and attended and graduated from Hendricks High School. After graduation he started driving truck for a road construction crew for about 10 years and also drove truck for other various companies but his true passion was farming. Verlyn was united in marriage to Sharon Larson at Calvary Lutheran Church in Hendricks and to this union they were blessed with five children. They were married for 48 years. Verlyn spent his life farming and in his spare time he enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings and the Los Angeles Lakers. He also enjoyed playing cards and outdoor games with his family. His daily walk to Vick’s Grocery to visit and the daily drive through the countryside was something he thoroughly enjoyed for years. His true passion besides farming was time well spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his special pet, Lucky. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and was a previous member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Verlyn was also a member of the local Buffalo Ridge Two-Cylinder Club.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children: Joni (Arlie) Svoboda, Jr., Alexandria, MN, Jennifer (Alan) Onken, Balaton, MN, Natalie (Joey Mendel) Johnson, Brookings, SD, Danelle Johnson and Brent Johnson, Hendricks and their mother, Sharon Johnson, Hendricks; his grandchildren: Jeremiah, Jesse and Jordan Svoboda, Tara and Taylor Onken, Cody and Joshua Kjelden; his great-grandchildren: Jayden Svoboda, Isaiah Svoboda, Samuel Larsen, Kaleena Svoboda, Scylla Svoboda, Morgan Mulder and Callum Onken and one sister, LorRae Carstens, Canby, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mildred Johnson; brothers-in-law, Fred Carstens and Courtney Ramlo, special relative, Scott Buysse and numerous other relatives.
