MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University President Kumara Jayasuriya will retire on May 15, 2025, following six years of leadership focused on enrollment growth, academic innovation, and community partnerships.
In a message to the campus community, Jayasuriya reflected on the university’s progress during his tenure, including a nearly 20% increase in enrollment, the highest fall enrollment in 14 years, and significant fundraising milestones—nearly $24 million raised toward a $30 million campaign. He also highlighted the addition of new academic programs, expanded partnerships with regional industries, and major campus renovations.
Jayasuriya joined SMSU in 2019 after holding leadership and faculty roles at West Virginia State University, Purdue University-North Central Campus, and Indiana University East.
Minnesota State Chancellor Scott Olson praised Jayasuriya’s leadership and service to the region, noting that he has provided SMSU with a solid foundation for continued growth. Olson, who served as search chair when Jayasuriya was hired, acknowledged the challenges faced by higher education in recent years and credited the outgoing president with guiding the university through them with a focus on innovation and collaboration.
In consultation with the Minnesota State Board of Trustees, Olson announced that the system will move forward with the appointment of an interim president. The interim term will begin July 1, 2025, and run through June 30, 2026. The position is open to current and former employees of Minnesota State and its colleges and universities, in accordance with the Personnel Plan for Minnesota State Administrators.
As outlined by Board Policy 4.2, the president serves as the university’s chief executive officer and is responsible for implementing institutional missions, overseeing strategic planning and resource allocation, and engaging with the campus and surrounding community. Interim candidates may be considered in the subsequent search for a permanent president.
Applications and nominations for the interim role must be submitted by noon on Monday, May 12, 2025, to ExecSearch@minnstate.edu. Required materials include a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references. Interviews will take place on May 29. The search is being managed by Deb Gehrke, Chief Human Resources Officer and Executive Search Manager for the system office.
A national search for a permanent SMSU president is scheduled to begin in early fall. Olson plans to visit the Marshall campus to meet with students, faculty, staff, and community members to gather input on the university’s next leader. Community members may also submit feedback or questions directly to Chancellor@MinnState.edu.
