MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) and Avera have announced a partnership to establish a four-year nursing program to expand educational opportunities for aspiring nurses and address the growing demand for healthcare professionals in Minnesota. The program will build on SMSU’s existing RN to BSN program, offering a more comprehensive pathway for nursing education.

The program will combine SMSU’s academic resources with Avera’s clinical expertise to provide a curriculum designed to meet modern healthcare needs. Plans include developing advanced nursing simulation labs with state-of-the-art equipment for both students and current nurses.

“We have outstanding faculty leadership designing an innovative curriculum that embraces technology and the future of healthcare,” said Dr. Ross Wastvedt, SMSU Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.

Approval is being sought from the Minnesota State system, the Minnesota Board of Nursing, and the Higher Learning Commission.

Local healthcare facilities are expected to benefit from the addition of highly trained graduates, addressing staffing shortages and improving patient care.

President Kumara Jayasuriya stated, “We are thrilled to partner with Avera to create a program that not only provides valuable educational opportunities for our students but also addresses a pressing need in our community.”

Debbie Streier, Avera Marshall Regional President and CEO, underscored the importance of expanding nursing education: “Ensuring a trained healthcare workforce is a major priority for Avera. This added opportunity for nursing education right here in Marshall will help ensure we have the professionals to provide the care our community needs.”
