MARSHALL (KMHL) — A Marshall Middle School student was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning at a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of East Main Street and A Street, according to Marshall Police and Marshall Public Schools officials.
The crash was reported at 7:46 a.m. Police Chief Jim Marshall said the student was taken to Avera Marshall Hospital for evaluation. Superintendent Jeremy Williams said Thursday morning he had heard the student was doing well.
The collision came as reconstruction work begins on Highway 19 in Marshall.
The intersection does not have crossing guards, but it does include a marked crosswalk on Main Street with a flashing pedestrian beacon. The incident remains under investigation.
Marshall urged drivers to be especially mindful of pedestrians, particularly as warmer weather returns and road construction changes traffic patterns across the city. Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert and always yield at crosswalks.
School officials said Marshall Public Schools will continue teaching students about safe crossing practices and encouraging children to use designated crossings or intersections staffed by crossing guards.
