Mavis J. Kirkvold, age 99, of Hendricks, MN, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks, MN. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2025 at Faith Lutheran Brethren Church in Hendricks with Rev. Darren Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Singsaas Cemetery, rural Hendricks, MN. Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Hendricks. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Hendricks is entrusted with the arrangements.
Mavis Jeanette (Nelson) Kirkvold was born on April 22nd, 1925. She died peacefully in her sleep at the Hendricks Nursing Home on February 6th, 2025 at age 99 with the sun shining on her face. She was 1 of 6 siblings; there were three sisters & three brothers. Her family lived on a farm north of Hendricks, where she lived and worked. She liked to feed carrots to the family’s horse, Teddy. She met and married the love of her life and dancing partner, Kermit S. Kirkvold on August 18th, 1950. They raised two of Mr. Kirkvold’s cousins as foster children and in 1965 they adopted their son, Brian. Mavis loved playing cards, dancing with Kermit, sewing, helping with cub scouts, and serving with lady’s aide. She also loved her time spent at the cabin by Lake Hendricks where she hosted family and friends from all over the world.
Grateful for having shared her life is her sons: Brian (Hope) Kirkvold & Alan Singsaas and daughter, Janet (Scott) Swenson; granddaughters: Jessica (Adam) Garza-Valdez, Kait (Nolan) Wagner, Kari (Ryan) Gale, and Britta Andrews and grandson Eric (Danielle) Swenson; several great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Kermit S. Kirkvold, her daughter JoAnn, parents, Melvin & Cora (Christianson) Nelson; sisters: Oriette Dahl and Phyllis Ask and brothers: Virgil, Maurice, and Wilfred Nelson.
