Services for Marvin “Marv” Bahn, 86, of Marshall, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church. A public walk-through visitation will take place on Monday at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment with military honors will follow the service at the Marshall Cemetery. Mask and social distancing requirements will be observed at all services.
Marvin “Marv” Harry Bahn was born on May 7, 1934, in Pipestone, to Herman and Elsie (Hansen) Bahn. Marv grew up in Pipestone and graduated from Pipestone High School in 1952. In June 1952, Marv entered the US Air Force, where he served as a tail gunner on the B-36 bomber. After his honorable discharge in May 1956, Marv moved back to Pipestone and worked at Fecker’s, where he met his future wife, Janet Woelber. Although their parents had been friends for years, Marv was reintroduced to Jan at the Hollyhock Ballroom in Hatfield. On July 5, 1957, Marv and Jan were united in marriage in Pipestone. The couple moved to Marshall in 1965 with their son, Randy, while Marv attended Southwest State University and was a member of the police reserve. Marv was a member of the Marshall Police Department for 31 ½ years, and he served as police chief for the last 15 years before his retirement in 1997. In his free time, Marv enjoyed playing the slot machines at local casinos. Marv also enjoyed playing BINGO, coin collecting, and drinking coffee at Mike’s Café.
Marv died on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Heritage Pointe Senior Living in Marshall. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Julie of Marshall; grandson Dallas of Sioux Falls, SD; granddaughter Alissa (Andrew) Peterson of Byron, great-grandchildren Adelyn and Annika; brothers Virgil of Pipestone and Darrell (Diane) of Austin; and sister-in-law Sharon of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Elsie, wife Jan, son Randy, and brother Duane.
