MARSHALL — The city of Marshall will have contested races in two key municipal elections this fall, as confirmed by recent candidate filings.

Incumbent Mayor Bob Byrnes is seeking re-election, facing a challenge from Noel Ayala, who previously ran for mayor in 2020. Additionally, three candidates—Dereck Deutz, Amanda Schwartz, and former city councilman David Sturrock—will compete for a seat on the Marshall City Council representing Ward 2.

The Marshall Public Schools School Board election will also see a crowded field, with six candidates vying for three available seats. The candidates include incumbents Matt Coleman and Anne Marie Vorbach, alongside newcomers Mary Swanson, Timothy Van Moer, Anne Veldhuisen, and Charlotte Wahle.

In Lyon County, several cities will hold mayoral and council races this fall, including Balaton, Cottonwood, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Lynd, Minneota, Russell, Taunton, and Tracy. Notably, Cottonwood has no candidates for the mayoral position, though Michael Horner and Corey Moseng have filed for two open city council seats.

Taunton also faces a shortage of candidates, with Eriann Faris running unopposed for mayor and Joseph DeVlaeminck as the sole candidate for two city council seats.

Russell is one of the few Lyon County cities besides Marshall with a contested mayoral race, where Hilary Buchert and Kristi Wiese are both running. Additionally, five candidates—Robert Buehler, Linda Escher, Dawn Garbe, Steven Schouviller, and Joel Van Damme—are vying for two council seats in Russell.

In Tracy, seven candidates are competing for three city council seats, while Balaton, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Lynd, and Minneota will also see elections for mayor and council members.

School board elections will be held in the Lakeview, Minneota, Lynd, Milroy, RTR, and Tracy school districts, with most districts having three seats up for election. In the RTR district, seats include an at-large member and representatives for Russell and Ruthton.
