MARSHALL — Local officials, community members, and project partners gathered Tuesday, May 20, to mark the dedication of the Marshall Solar Plus (MSP) project, a renewable energy facility combining 10 megawatts (MW) of solar generation with 5 MW of battery storage.

Located on 78 acres in Lyon County, the facility includes approximately 21,000 photovoltaic panels across 55 acres and an integrated energy-storage system. The combined components are expected to provide up to 15 MW of capacity and generate around 21,000 megawatt-hours annually—an amount estimated to power about 2,000 homes.

MSP is owned by Marshall Solar Plus, LLC, a subsidiary of the Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (WMMPA), and operated by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES). US Solar supported the permitting, design, and construction. The facility became operational in December 2024 after two years of development.

“Today, we celebrate more than a new solar project. We celebrate a step forward in the MRES promise to deliver reliable, affordable energy to the 61 member communities we serve,” said MRES President and CEO Matt Schull.

“This project is a prime example of how solar energy and battery storage can work together to meet real-world energy demands,” said US Solar President Reed Richerson. “We’re thrilled to have partnered with these public power utilities to bring Marshall Solar Plus to life.”

The energy produced is connected to the City of Marshall’s distribution system and contributes to the broader mix of resources used by MRES to supply electricity to its member communities.
