Margaret Gabriel (Thieren) Haneca was born on August 28, 1926, in Tracy, to Maurice and Anna (Vandendries) Thieren. Margaret grew up in Tracy and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy. There she met the love of her life, Joe Haneca. On April 17, 1945, they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy. The couple made their home and raised six children the family farm in Wood Lake until they retired and moved to Cottonwood. After Joe passed away in 2009, Margaret’s health failed and she moved to Boulder Estates Assisted Living in Marshall. From there, she was moved to Boulder Creek Memory Care.  Margaret was very involved with St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood, where she served as president and historian of the CCW, and she taught religion class. She also volunteered at Senior Dining and the Cottonwood Country Club. In her free time, Margaret enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards. She enjoyed trips with the gold and silver club and spending time at the senior center. Margaret especially enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings, a good cup of coffee, and dancing. She was a great baker and cook, always having baked goods on hand when her family came over. She loved holidays and get-togethers, which were very special to her. Every Saturday night, she came home from church and had a piece of pizza and a beer. Margaret loved visiting her family and friends. She loved spending time with family, and she was proud of all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret died on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at Boulder Creek Memory Care in Marshall. She is survived by her children Richard of Wood Lake, Larry (Pat) of Shoreview, Dariel (Ana Maria) of Florida, Raymond (Donna) of Montevideo, Jolene (Walker) of Washington, and Darwin of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren Kent (Laura), Tony (Kelly), Stacy (Josh), Micki (Diego), David, Brandy, Nick (Sherry), Charla (Michael), Jamie (Mary), Dustin (Katie), Lacey (Ron), and Cody; 26 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren; sister Doris Gregoire of Marshall; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joe, daughters-in-law Heidi and Pat Haneca, brothers Henry and Frank Thieren, great-grandson Caden, and step-grandchildren Keven and Troy Hughes.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Boulder Creek Memory Care and everyone involved in her end of life care, as well as Father Dennis Labat, Horvath Funeral Service, and everyone else who helped plan and participated in her funeral.
