Lylis “Lyla” Nelson, age 88, of Canby, MN passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby, MN. Funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, October 10th at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm on Wednesday, October 9th at the Houseman Funeral Home Birk Chapel in Canby, MN with a prayer service at 7pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the Canby City Cemetery. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel of Canby, MN is entrusted with the arrangements.

Lylis “Lyla” Mae Nelson was born August 4, 1936 in Oshkosh Township, Canby, Minnesota to Arthur and Lena (Winters) Plageman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Canby High School in 1954. Lyla moved to Minneapolis and worked as a payroll clerk at Minneapolis Moline.  On September 15, 1956 she was united in marriage to the boy she had met on the bus in 5th grade (Roger Nelson) at Zaccheus Lutheran Church. They started their married life at East Greenwich, RI where Roger was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Antietam. Their Navy journey eventually moved them to Jacksonville Beach where they had the joy of welcoming their first-born son, Brett. The came home to Canby and started farming and raising their family. Roger and Lyla managed to visit all 50 states in their travels.  Lyla enjoyed quilting, embroidery and sewing. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, photography, journaling, camping and fishing. She received Master Angler in Manitoba for catching and releasing an over 30-inch walleye. She embroidered numerous baby quilts and other quilts and dish towels as gifts.  Most of all she enjoyed family get togethers, be it holidays or camping. Grandchildren and great grandchildren liked spending time in her camper and helping to decorate cookies.  She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran and WELCA. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a 4-H Leader, a Bloodmobile Donor and Volunteer for many years. In 2020, Lyla was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and she passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 3 days.

Grateful for having shared Lyla’s life are her children: Brett (Jamie) Nelson; Bonnie (Chuck) Moberg and Rick (Sherry) Nelson; grandchildren: Barry Nelson, Matt (Molly Kvam) Nelson, Nick Stewart (Rosio Lizardo), Jill (Anthony) Vait, Matthew Stewart, Jesse (Lindee) Nelson, Jodi (Adam) DeCock, Misti (Mitch) Quiring; 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; her sister, Myrtle Osmond; sisters-in-law, Joanne Nelson and Elonne (Russ) Winter; brother-in-law, Rick Winter and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers: Edwin, Alvin, Marvin, Goodwin and sisters, Rose Hansen, Lillian Christie, Violet Christie and Fern Donaldson and great grandson Trey Lee Stewart.
