OLIVIA, MN — Authorities are investigating the death of an adult male inmate at the Renville County Jail. 

Correctional staff found the inmate unresponsive and not breathing in his cell at about 7:25 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026. Life-saving measures were started immediately, and the inmate was transported to Olivia Hospital & Clinics, where he was pronounced dead. 

The inmate’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. 

In accordance with sheriff’s office policy, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. 

Officials said there is no indication of foul play at this time. The investigation remains active, and no additional details have been released.
