SUMMARY:“Transforming Care: A Mental Health and Neurodiversity Conference”-Marshall
DESCRIPTION:NAMI Minnesota to Host Conference on Mental Health and Neurodiversity in Marshall \nNAMI Minnesota (the National Alliance on Mental Illness)\, in partnership with Southwest Minnesota State University and Prairie Winds Counseling\, Inc.\, will host “Transforming Care: A Mental Health and Neurodiversity Conference” on Thursday\, April 9\, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. \nThis regional conference invites people from across Southwest Minnesota — including healthcare providers\, educators\, direct service professionals\, families\, and community members — to come together for a shared learning experience focused on improving understanding and care for neurodivergent adults living with co-occurring mental health conditions. \nThrough a combination of expert-led sessions and lived-experience perspectives\, the conference will explore practical strategies to increase empathy\, address common barriers to care\, and strengthen skills applicable across healthcare\, social services\, education\, and community settings. \n“Across Southwest Minnesota\, we know that people want to provide better support but often lack access to the right training and tools\,” said Marcus Schmit\, NAMI Minnesota executive director. “This conference brings those resources directly to the region\, helping communities better understand neurodiversity and respond in ways that improve both mental health outcomes and overall quality of care.” \nSessions will cover topics such as understanding the internal experience of ADHD in adulthood\, supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities during crisis situations\, and exploring the intersection of mental health recovery and neurodivergence through lived experience. \nNeurodivergent adults frequently encounter challenges\, including misunderstood symptoms\, misdiagnoses\, and limited access to appropriate care. These barriers can be especially pronounced in Greater Minnesota\, where access to specialized training and services may be more limited. \n“We are committed to ensuring that communities across the state — not just in the metro area — have access to high-quality mental health education\,” Schmit added. “By investing in knowledge and understanding at the local level\, we can build more responsive systems of care and stronger\, more supportive communities.” \nThe event has been approved for three continuing education units (CEUs) by the Minnesota Board of Social Work\, with additional approvals pending for other licensing boards. Registration is $75 and includes CEUs. \nThe conference will take place at the Southwest Minnesota State University Student Center/Conference Center. Free parking is available on site. \nTo register or learn more\, visit NAMI Minnesota’s website\, namimn.org\, or contact publiceducation@namimn.org. \n_______________________________________ \nAbout NAMI Minnesota \nNAMI Minnesota is the state’s leading grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. Through education\, support\, and advocacy\, NAMI Minnesota works to increase awareness and understanding\, promote recovery\, and improve systems of care across the state. Learn more at namimn.org.
