SUMMARY:Southwest Minnesota Arts Council Features the Photography of Matthew Borchert-Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Minnesota Arts Council announces \nGallery Exhibit & Two Artist Receptions \nfeaturing \nthe photography of \nMatthew Borchert \n  \nExhibit runs May 15 – June 27\, 2025 \nCheck out this exhibit either in-person or virtually \n*The SMAC GALLERY is located at 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \nRegular office hours: Monday – Friday 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm \n  \nPlease help SMAC welcome our next gallery exhibit featuring the photographic art of MATTHEW BORCHERT (Marietta). This exhibit will be in the SMAC Gallery in downtown Marshall at 509 West Main Street from May 15 – June 27\, 2025. Borchert received two Quick Support for Artists grants\, one in 2023 and one in 2025 to further his photography skills and technology. \n  \nMeet Matthew \nMatthew Borchert is a photographer based out of South West Minnesota. Not specializing in any particular style he explores all aspects of photography. His passion for photography can said to be accidental. Suffering from many setbacks during life Matthew developed several mental health issues. Such as bi-polar disorder\, depression\, anxiety\, survivors syndrome and PTSD. Those conditions led him to be extremely introverted\, cutting himself off from the world. Through these conditions Matthew reached a peak weight of 425lbs and tried to end his life twice. He had pretty much given up\, then in 2021 something snapped and he said “no more”. He began looking for help and started seeing a counselor. Matthew decided to buy a camera\, not to have gallery shows or be in magazines but as motivation to get out of his comfort zone. He began to search for the beauty of the world around him through his camera. While looking for this beauty something even more profound happened. He began to find himself. He began to find self worth and meaning. He began to find happiness. Then he discovered his photos stirred a feeling in others. He decided to use this platform to help spread awareness of mental health issues\, hoping to help lift the stigma they have long held. Having had digital gallery shows at the FotoZ Gallery in Johannesburg South Africa and the Conningsby Gallery in London England and an in-person Gallery Show at the Madison Mercantile in Madison MN. Having photos published in numerous magazines and newspapers including Minnesota Monthly Magazine and having photos highlighted on several news stations like WCCO. His photos have been shared on social media by entities such as Nat. Geo and NASA. Photographing several band and musicians including names like Terri Clark\, Magdalene Rose\, David Nail\, Tyler Braden and many others including too many to name from right here in Minnesota. He can still be heard saying “I’m no professional\, I’m just a redneck with a camera”. \n  \nJoin an IN-PERSON artist reception on \nThursday\, May 15\, 2025 from 5-7pm \nat the SMAC Gallery\, 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \n~ Enjoy the music of Tony Moger during this reception \n  \n~Join a VIRTUAL artist talk via Zoom on \nThursday\, June 12\, 2025 at 5:30 pm. \nPlease email SMAC staff [info@swmnarts.org] for the ZOOM link to join this Artist Talk. \n  \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Funding provided by the McKnight Foundation. Minnesota thrives when its artists thrive. The McKnight Foundation supports working artists to create and contribute to vibrant communities. \n  \n\nSouthwest Minnesota Arts Council\n509 West Main Street\,\nMarshall\, MN 56258\n507-537-1471

We encourage you to step forward and support the community’s blood supply at this blood drives on May 19. You will not be disappointed with the feeling you receive knowing you saved a life.” \nDonors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form)\, weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation. SUMMARY:SMAC Features the Photography of JOHN SALGADO MALDONADO "Willmar\, What comes to your mind?"-Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Minnesota Arts Council announces \nGallery Exhibit & Two Artist Receptions \nfeaturing \nthe photography of \n\n\nJOHN SALGADO MALDONADO \n“Willmar\, What comes to your mind?” \nExhibit runs May 7 – June 26\, 2026 \nCheck out this exhibit either in-person or virtually* \nThe SMAC GALLERY is located at 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \nRegular office hours: Monday – Friday 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm \nWillmar\, What comes to your mind?! This exhibition is a critical view to our society\, to our way of thinking about variety\, and diversity\, a sort of awareness of what we have been taught to value and what’s not. This exhibition calls out the viewer to a self reflection through a “cognitive dissonance”. \n  \nGallery /Galería\nHow important is it to have different options\, perspectives\, and experiences as a human being? Have you thought about how much you value diversity or variety in your daily life? \nTruth is we do value diversity in different measures\, on a daily basis\, and it seems that we enjoy life like this; the more diverse\, the richer experiences we have. \n  \nWhen we look at gardens\, creativity gives way to diversity and vice versa. When we experiences on our bodies and skin the nature and all seasons\, when in simple activities\, like going to the grocery store\, finding colors and shapes (options) in most of the items\, we experience diversity…and we appreciate it. \nSo the question – reflection comes to the mind…Why is so hard with human beings? To embrace the otherness? Not just tolerating\, or accepting\, but even furthermore\, seeking it\, because as we experience in our daily life\, this is richer in that way. And therein lies the cognitive dissonance. \n  \n  \nJoin an IN-PERSON artist reception on \nThursday\, May 7\, 2026 \nfrom 5-7pm \nat the SMAC Gallery\, 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \n  \n*Enjoy community drumming led by\nPURPOSE ARTISANS\nduring this reception* \nJoin a VIRTUAL artist talk via Zoom on \nThursday\, June 11 2026 \nat 5:30 pm. \n  \nPlease email SMAC staff [info@swmnarts.org] for the ZOOM link to join this Artist Talk. \nSouthwest Minnesota Arts Council\n509 West Main Street\,\nMarshall\, MN 56258\n507-537-1471
