SUMMARY:Upcoming exhibit at the SMAC ART GALLERY: Sheila Tabaka-Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Minnesota Arts Council announces \nGallery Exhibit & Two Artist Receptions \nfeaturing the Scottish Kiltmaking of \nSHEILA TABAKA \nExhibit runs January 15 – February 27\, 2026 \nCheck out this exhibit either in-person or virtually* \nThe SMAC GALLERY is located at 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \nRegular office hours: Monday – Friday 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm \nMeet Sheila \nMy name is Sheila Tabaka. I am a proud part of the Entertainment and Theatre Arts program at Southwest Minnesota State University here in Marshall\, MN\, where I also serve as the Costume Designer. \nThrough my work in the theatre I am able to explore different eras\, styles and clothing construction techniques. I am inspired by the colors and textures of the fabrics. Fabrics have the ability to be stiff and straight like a tartan kilt or soft and wispy like a chiffon scarf. As fabric artists we can choose their fate. We can hold them\, shape them and give them another life as a finished garment. \nAs many artists do\, I also work outside the theatre on different artistic ventures-most notably my work with the Scottish tartans and kilts. After a workshop in Edinburgh in 2024\, my life has opened up to a whole new artistic venture. Traditional (handmade) Scottish kiltmaking\, an endangered handcraft in the United Kingdom (https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/categories-of-risk/)\, requires patience and time and commitment. It’s slow going at times but incredibly rewarding. The craft of the historic artisan is incredibly fascinating to me and through this new work\, I get to experience some of that history firsthand. \nI am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to exhibit some of my work. \nJoin an IN-PERSON artist reception on \nThursday\, January 15\, 2026 \nfrom 5-7pm \nat the SMAC Gallery\, 509 West Main Street\, Marshall \n*Enjoy the musical talents of\nBRIANNA KINSINGER\nduring this reception* \nJoin a VIRTUAL artist talk via Zoom on \nThursday\, February 5\, 2026 \nat 5:30 pm. \nPlease email SMAC staff [info@swmnarts.org] for the ZOOM link to join this Artist Talk. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Funding provided by the McKnight Foundation. Minnesota thrives when its artists thrive. The McKnight Foundation supports working artists to create and contribute to vibrant communities.\nSouthwest Minnesota Arts Council\n509 West Main Street\,\nMarshall\, MN 56258\n507-537-1471
