Briar’s Story:

Briar was diagnosed in utero at 23 weeks with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The left side of his heart is undeveloped. This congenital heart disease happens every 1 in 4,344 births and the cause is unknown. They were seen at the U of M Masonic Children’s Hospital for appointments before his birth.

On July 6th he underwent his first open heart surgery at the children’s hospital. During surgery they made his aortal larger and placed a sano shunt so he would have blood flow to his body and lungs. The surgery took 8 hours. Briar recovered well from surgery, but they ran into some bumps along the way.

  • infection: treated with antibiotics for 6 weeks
  • blood clots
  • de-saturations meaning his oxygen levels would go below 60’s
  • seizures and a stroke

He will have to undergo 2 more surgeries; one at 4-6 months of age and another around 3 years. He will be on medications for the rest of his life and is currently taking around 10 medications a day.

Briar has truly been amazing through this whole process. He has had to overcome many obstacles and keeps fighting with all he has.

They would like to thank the families for being supportive of them through the ups and downs and never leaving their side. The also want to thank the community for hosting this benefit to help with Briar’s medical expenses.
