Ernst “Ernie” Schnarr, Jr., age 78, of Canby, MN passed away Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Sylvan Place Assisted Living in Canby, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, November 14, 2020 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.

Ernst Henry John Schnarr, Jr., was born on May 11, 1942, the son of Ernst and Emma (Grohmann) Schnarr in Mitchell, South Dakota. He attended grade school in Madison, SD and Brandt, SD. Ernst graduated from Toronto High School in Toronto, SD in 1960. Following his education, he joined the National Guard in 1961, during the Cuban Missile Crisis where he served out his enlistment until 1967. In 1970, he joined National Guard the 741st Transportation Company in Clear Lake and retired from the National Guard in 1993.  Ernst was united in marriage to MaryAnn (Vermeire) DeBaere on August 22, 1975 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby. He farmed north of Brandt, SD until 1977. They moved to Clear Lake, SD and worked for Rogness Brothers in Astoria, SD. In 1986, they moved to Astoria until moving to Canby, MN in 1990. MaryAnn passed away on September 9, 2016. Ernst remained in Canby and currently resided in the Sylvan Place Assisted Living where he passed away Saturday, November 7, 2020 at the age of 78.  He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. Was a past member of the American Legion Post in Toronto, SD and Canby, MN. Ernst enjoyed doing crafts, putting together models and puzzles, watching westerns and tv show American Pickers, bowling, listening to Country Western Music, watching the Minnesota Twins and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by six step children: Deb (Steve) Gruener of Brandt, SD, Bryan (Lori) DeBaere of Rapid City, SD, Bruce (Sherri) DeBaere of Clear Lake, SD, Theresa (Dean) Gruener of Brandt, SD, Darce (Dave) Curtis of Watertown, SD, Brice (Lisa) DeBaere of Glyndon, MN; 15 step grandchildren; and 17 step great-grandchildren.  Ernst was preceded in death by his wife MaryAnn, parents and sister Mary Schnarr.
