Duane Paul Kerr was born on February 27, 1931 in Lawton, ND to George and Anna (Wischer) Kerr. When Duane was 5 years old, the family moved to the Minneota area. As a child, he attended a country school, later graduating from Lynd Public High School. As a young man, he enjoyed assisting his father on the farm and breaking horses. Duane served in the Army. He entered in 1952 and was stationed in Germany. Following his years of service, he returned to farming in the Russell area. Duane married Barbara Fischer on June 27, 1959 at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. The couple built a home where they raised their family of five children. Duane thoroughly enjoyed his work as a grain farmer, raising stock and feeder cattle and operating a gravel business.  Duane had a variety of interests. He was a member of the Ghent American Legion Post. He enjoyed spending time at cattle sales, fishing, golfing, and refurbishing antique furniture. He could repair anything large or small. He enjoyed traveling to 50 states and many countries. As an avid reader, he would keep the Minneota librarians busy finding new books for him to read. Duane spent many hours attending plays, concerts and sporting events of his children and grandchildren. And, most of all, Duane loved to talk with people: those he knew, and any stranger that he met. He was a storyteller.

Duane passed away on October 5, 2021, at Avera Regional Medical Center in Marshall.
