(Minneapolis, MN)  –  Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will be sentenced on Friday after being convicted of murdering George Floyd last year. The former Minneapolis police officer has been in jail since his conviction in April.

Judge Peter Cahill will decide if the ex-cop will get probation, an outcome requested bu his attorney, or more than the 30-year punishment favored by prosecutors.

Chauvin was seen on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes.  Floyd’s death sparked global outrage and protests in addition to unrest. Chauvin and the three other former officers on the scene that day were indicted on federal charges of violating Floyd’s civil rights.
