Darold D. Hunt, age 79, of Gary, SD, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at his home near Gary. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, SD. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Gary, SD. Visitation will be 5 – 7 pm Friday, April 28th at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, SD and will resume Saturday one hour prior to the service. Houseman Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
Darold Dennis Hunt was born on July 19, 1943, near Moritz, South Dakota to Marvin and Mable (Musch) Hunt. He was baptized and confirmed at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, SD. Darold attended Country School District #33 for eight years and then graduated from Gary High School in 1961. He attended a trade school for one year and then began farming in 1962. Darold was united in marriage to Mary Devorak on April 30, 1963, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary. Darold and Mary were blessed with 59 years, five days shy of celebrating their 60th anniversary. They lived, farmed and raised their family on a farm west of Gary, SD where Darold milked dairy cows for 40 years, 3 weeks and 2 days before he transitioned to beef cows. In 2008, they moved from the farm, but continued to farm until 2020 when he retired due to health concerns. He was a lifelong member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary where he served on the church council, was a Sunday school teacher, and served as the chairman of the building committee. Darold also served for 20 years as a Deuel County Commissioner and on the Herrick Township Board. Darold enjoyed and was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchild.
Darold is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Hunt, Gary, SD; three children: Lori (Gary) Greckel, Omaha, NE; Steven (Audra) Hunt, Gary, SD; and Michael (Katie) Hunt, Gary, SD; eight grandchildren: Alysa (Ethan) Harner; Jacoby, Jamison and Cassidy Hunt; and Logan, Bailey, Sadie, and Leah Hunt; one great grandchild, Luca Harner; brother, Darwin (Delores) Hunt; sisters-in-law: Brenda Hunt, Diane Schulte, and Bonnie (Bill) Zink; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Sherry Miller; two brothers, Marvin Hunt, Jr. and David Hunt; and in-laws John and Delores Devorak.
