PAYNESVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that followed a domestic abuse call in Paynesville on Monday night.

According to police, officers responded around 9 p.m. to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an armed man and a woman at a residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. The woman was able to exit the home safely and told officers she had been assaulted, sustaining minor injuries to her head and neck.

Authorities said the man was locked in the basement when officers from the Paynesville and Cold Spring police departments and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office arrived. After ordering him to surrender, a confrontation occurred during which shots were fired.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered, and police are still determining who fired the fatal shot.

Body camera footage captured the incident. The BCA is now handling the investigation for the officer-involved shooting.
