Marshall, Minn. — The 38th Annual Avera Race Against Cancer is set for Saturday, May 9, with events taking place in Marshall, Minnesota, and several South Dakota communities, including Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Pierre and Yankton. Organizers expect more than 7,500 participants this year.

In Marshall, the race will start and finish at Independence Park on East Lyon Street. Local participants can choose a 1-mile walk, 5K fun run or walk, or a virtual race option.

Race day registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Activities include the Circle of Hope, survivor and group photo, and a warm-up before the 1-mile and 5K events begin. A recognition and fellowship gathering will follow the race.

The event raises money to support cancer patients and families in local communities through services such as transportation and lodging assistance, screening and early detection, genetic testing, specialized equipment, wigs, grief support and complementary therapies.

Funds also help support the Avera Cancer Institute Navigation Center, a 24/7 resource for people affected by cancer.

The race will be held rain or shine, although organizers say it could be canceled in extreme circumstances. If that happens, registration fees will be treated as donations to benefit cancer patients and families served by the Avera Cancer Institute. Any cancellation notice would be sent by email and posted on the Avera Race Facebook page.

Participants can register as runners, walkers, supporters or virtual entrants, either individually or as part of a team. Organizers say the race remains deeply personal for many participants, with most taking part in honor or support of a loved one impacted by cancer. More information, registration and donation details are available at AveraRace.org.
