Arlene Hilda Sutherland was born on December 11, 1932 to Clarence and Helen (Cooper) Johnson in Indian Lake Township, Nobles County, Minnesota. She lived on the farm with her family and attended school at Round Lake, Minnesota, where she graduated in 1950. As a child she enjoyed participating in 4H and showed Hereford cattle. Throughout her childhood and early adult life, she was an active member of the Indian Lake Baptist Church, which built a foundation of strong faith that she carried her entire life. She continued to live and work on the family farm until her marriage to the love of her life, Laris Sutherland, on March 7, 1958 at the Indian Lake Baptist Church. After marriage, the couple moved to a farm near Ruthton, Minnesota for 5 years and then to a farm outside of Balaton, Minnesota where they resided until their retirement. Arlene devoted her life to raising her children, Cheryl, Linda, Janet, and Duane. This devotion to caring for her family continued as her grandchildren were born. She worked hard to pass on her strong family values. After retirement Arlene moved to Boulder Estates Assisted Living in Marshall, Minnesota where she resided for a number of years before moving to Avera Morningside Heights in Marshall. She was residing there when she went to be with her Savior on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at the age of 89 years and 12 days. Arlene was very appreciative of the special relationships she developed with the nursing home staff and her family will always be grateful for their wonderful care of her.

Arlene’s faith has always been very important to her. She was an active member of Sillerud Lutheran Church in Balaton. She was also a member of the Birthday Club, the Extension Club, and the Card Club. She also loved farm life. She could be seen working in her flower and vegetable gardens, canning what she grew, raising chickens and gathering eggs, and sharing what she had with her neighbors. She did all of this with a smile on her face, a caring word to those around her, and never bore a complaint. When she had spare time, Arlene enjoyed reading books, embroidery, and playing bingo.

Arlene is lovingly remembered by her children, Cheryl (Duane) Berglund of Russell, Minnesota, Linda Sutherland, Janet (John) Trost of Russell, and Duane (Christie) Sutherland of Balaton; her grandchildren, Crystal Buysse, Amanda Blomme, Josh Berglund, Kayla Buchert, Adam Trost, Rachel Rockensock, Troy Trost, Carter Sutherland, and Alyssa Sutherland; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Laris Sutherland; parents, Clarence and Helen Johnson; and siblings, Marian (Don) Voss, Clarence (Bertha) Johnson, and Vern (Lavonne) Saulsbarry.
